Ordinary Moments

Discipleship—to many parents (and Christians alike) it seems like a daunting task. Sure every parents wants to disciple their child, but knowing how is where most parents feel they fall short. What if discipleship wasn’t a task at hand but more of a way of life? THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER IS THAT'S WHAT THE LORD INTENDED IT TO BE. The call to discipleship is a lifestyle that is to be lived out in the every day moments of life.

The sum of our life is made up of "ordinary" moments with maybe a few extraordinary ones scattered throughout. I remember one specific, seemingly ordinary, moment of my life that turned out to be something quite extraordinary. It was a typical day that included my mom taxiing my siblings and I to all of our extra-curricular activities. While we were riding in the car several emergency vehicles zoomed passed us. Nothing really out of the ordinary, but what happened next had a profound impact on my life. As the emergency vehicles flew by mom said, "Why don’t we pray for whatever that situation is." My siblings and I all looked at each other and were like, "Huh?" Never before had my mom asked us to do this and it seemed like a simple enough request, it was just out of the ordinary so in the moment we were surprised by it. However simple or unusual that request may have seemed, that one request had a profound impact on my life. It was in that moment that I realized Jesus wasn’t just something we talked about or experienced on Sunday, but He was someone who could (and would) invade my reality on a Monday or any other given moment in time.

While that’s a sweet little story, the impact that moment had on me was monumental—to this very day. I still stop and pray anytime I hear sirens or see emergency vehicles rushing off to rescue those in need. More importantly that experience showed me the value of making the most of teachable moments—those are the moments in life where the ordinary can become the extraordinary. Mostly because those are the times in life when the Jesus we read about in the Bible becomes the Jesus that invades our reality and walks with us personally.

As parents, even more importantly as Christians, it is our responsibility to take the ordinary moments in life and use them to teach our children and others about Christ. That’s discipleship. In Deuteronomy 6, Moses tells the Israelites the Lord’s command to, "love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength." He continues, "These words…are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children." The text goes on to explain even in the "ordinary" of life—when we wake up, when we lay down to sleep, when we are out and about going on our way… whatever we are doing—we should be focused on the things of the Lord. But how do we make everything about Him? The Scripture we just read plainly tells us. WE HAVE TO FIRST LOVE HIM WITH ALL WE'VE GOT. Then we must spend quality time in His word. Before he told the Israelites to teach their children he told them, “These words…are to be in your heart”. When we do that, discipleship will happen naturally because it will come from the overflow of our heart. It’s that simple. I want to challenge you to nurture your relationship with Christ so you can help people see Him in the ordinary moments of life. You’ll soon find that is what makes life extraordinary!
