The Great Co-Mission: Never Work Alone

Matthew 28:18-20 – “Jesus came near and said to them, ‘All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’”

You may have heard of the passage above referred to as The Great Commission. This passage in Matthew is the last record of Jesus’ words to the disciples after His resurrection and before His ascension into heaven. Missionaries everywhere use this passage as their anthem. This passage is not meant for missionaries only, but for all believers. Many of us forget to connect the instructions Jesus gave with the last sentence of the passage – “And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

MISSIONS — OBEYING JESUS' COMMAND TO MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL THE NATIONS — IS OFTEN VIEWED AS SOMETHING BELIEVERS DO FOR GOD. The idea of  making disciples for God can be daunting. After all, we’re only human. Are we really qualified to share the most important news in the history of the world? The answer is no! At least not on our own.

Jesus’ command is not to do this mission for God, but rather with Him. Jesus promised to be with us always! He alone empowers us to obey the Great Commission by making disciples. We cannot do this alone. God carries out out this urgent mission with us. In light of this, perhaps we could better refer to this passage as the Great Co-Mission.
