Christ In Christmas

What’s the best Christmas present you’ve ever received? I vividly remember one Christmas when I was a boy, I asked for a very specific toy. It was called a Talkboy and it was featured in the movie, Home Alone 2, where Kevin McAlister would use it to record audio and play it back. I think every child my age asked for a Talkboy for Christmas that year! Well, I woke up Christmas morning and opened up all my presents but one. I just knew that my Talkboy had to be in that last package. I unwrapped that final present with great anticipation and excitement only to find that the contents of that final present were… clothes… boring clothes! Needless to say, I was a little disappointed.

Gifts are a part of Christmas not only because JESUS IS THE GREATEST GIFT, but also because Jesus was given gifts when He was just a small child. The three magi traveled from distant lands to bring Jesus some expensive and extremely symbolic gifts. The gold signified that Jesus was born a King. He is our King, and He is the King of Kings! The frankincense signified that Jesus is our Great High Priest. Jesus is the Mediator between God and man, and our salvation is only possible through Him. The third gift is more unique and even strange. Myrrh was used primarily as an embalming fluid for the dead which makes it a strange gift for anyone, but especially for a small child. This was a foreshadowing of the cross where Jesus would lay down His sinless life for us. The gift of myrrh signifies that Jesus is our sacrifice.

With all the distractions around us, let’s make sure we truly worship Jesus this Christmas. Let’s make sure everyone in our families knows that Jesus is the reason why we give gifts. Christmas is all about worshiping Jesus as our risen King, praising Him because He is our great High Priest, and thanking Him for being our Sacrifice! Christmas is so much more than celebrating Jesus’ birth. It’s about celebrating THE GIFT OF THE GOSPEL WILL NEVER DISAPPOINT!
