Multiply—Week 1

All the Biblical writers write with a purpose. The videos that begin each new book in the Bible Project Reading Plan will give an opinion as to what that purpose might be. When we are trying to understand a particular passage it’s helpful to see how our understanding of the passage supports the author’s overall purpose. We should keep this in mind so that we don’t take a passage out of context. CONTEXT RULES.

We begin our study and reading plan with 2 Timothy 3:14-17. It is foundational. If we don’t believe that Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable, why should we read it or study it or seek to mold our lives by its teaching?

If we do believe that “All Scripture is inspired by God” and is useful then we should be able to find some value and teaching even in the genealogies that we find there.

Our reading this week includes Matthew’s account of the genealogy of Jesus. While it might seem boring a careful reading can be enlightening. Matthew mentions five women in the genealogy. Why these five? Do they have anything in common? Could these be mentioned because they somehow support his purpose for writing?

Even though I’ve read this genealogy many times I noticed something new this time with regard to how Solomon’s mother is referred to by Matthew. In the Old Testament when she is mentioned in context as Solomon’s mother, I believe she is always referred to either by her name Bathsheba/Bathshua or as David’s wife. If that is correct why would Matthew refer to her as Uriah’s?

The video mentions that one of the purposes of Matthew was to show that Jesus was the New Moses that was promised, see Deuteronomy 18:15-18. This theme can be found in the other Gospels as well as in Paul and the book of Hebrews and Peter’s sermon in Acts 3:22, but it is more prominent in Matthew’s Gospel. The CSB translation of Dt. 18:15 reads, “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him.” And Mt. 17:5b in the CSB reads, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased. Listen to him!” In the Old Testament the Hebrew word translated listen/hear about 1/3 of the time carries the additional meaning of obey. It is used with this sense here and in Dt. 6:4-9 which is a passage called the Shema. Shema is a transliteration of the Hebrew word translated ‘Here or Listen.’ To truly hear or listen to God’s Word is to obey that Word.

There are also parallels in Moses’ early life and that of Jesus. Both had Kings that sought to kill them while they were babies. Both remained away from the danger until a revelation was given that the person trying to kill them had died. We’ll see many other similarities between Jesus and Moses as well as how Jesus was the fulfillment of many other Old Testament prophecies as we read the Gospel of Matthew.

While it only takes a few minutes a day to read the Bible in a year, you can study it for a lifetime.
