How many times have you made a New Year’s Resolution only to fail at it? Maybe it was six months later, six weeks, six days, or even six hours, but you found yourself right back where you started. A few years ago, The New York Times published a study that showed the vast majority of New Year’s resolutions are doomed to failure. The study said that 80% of those who make resolutions have given up by Valentine’s Day!
Sometimes our resolutions stick, but the ultimate reason that we can’t keep our resolutions is that we’re unable to change our hearts. That’s something only God can do! Charles Spurgeon said, “The Scripture does not say, you must be improved, but YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN.” God says In Ezekiel 36:26, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”
Psychologists and psychiatrists may be able to help give us some insight into the reasons we do the things we do, but not a single one of them can change a person’s heart. We’re all powerless to change ourselves without God changing us from the inside out. This is why all true change in our lives has to start with the power of the Gospel.
So, the best way to grow as a person this year is to grow in your relationship with Jesus. Make sure every resolution you make is grounded in loving the Lord with every aspect of your being. When you fail, not if but when, know that God’s grace is sufficient for you, and HIS POWER IS PUT ON DISPLAY even in your weakness.
