Multiply—Week 5

There are not many accounts of Jesus that are found in all four Gospels. The ones that come to mind are the ‘Feeding of the five thousand,’ ‘the Crucifixion,’ and ‘the Triumphal Entry.’ In this week’s reading we have Matthew’s account of the Triumphal Entry. The Triumphal Entry is found in Mt. 21:1-9; Mk. 11:1-10; Lk. 19:28-40 and Jn. 12:12-19. Obviously, all our Gospel writers found this event very important to their presentation of Jesus.
We’ll look briefly at Matthew’s account. The time is the Sunday of Passover week that came to be known in the Christian calendar as Palm Sunday, so named from John’s account. Passover was one of the three great festivals celebrated by the Jews. Jews from all the surrounding area and beyond would be coming to Jerusalem for this event. The crowds would be enormous.

Matthew, as is characteristic of his gospel account, interprets Jesus’ coming into Jerusalem as fulfillment of O.T. prophecy. Jesus in planning this entrance must also have understood it this way. He was fulfilling prophecy. Matthew’s quotation is a composite of Isa. 62:11 and Zech. 9:9. In the first devotional video on Matthew they suggested that we look up the fulfillment passages and look at their contexts to see what we can learn. Isaiah 62 is messianic and promises salvation is coming while the Zech. 9 passage declares a king is coming who will bring peace. Matthew understood this when he wrote this Gospel. Jesus did not come as the waring Messiah that was expected, but rather the suffering servant Messiah that would bring peace.

As Jesus gets close to Jerusalem there are crowds going before Him and crowds behind Him. This time Matthew doesn’t say that Jesus is fulfilling Scripture, but the crowds are shouting Scripture. The quote comes from Psa. 118:25-26.

The CSB translation puts O.T. quotes in the N.T. in bold print. Other modern translations use various means to indicate O.T. quotations. Some use quotation marks, some indent the passage, some use italics. What’s unique about the CSB is that they only use bold words when there is corresponding text in the O.T. In this passage the CSB presents it this way.

Hosanna to the Son of David!
Blessed is he who comes in the name
of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!

‘The Son of David’ is not found in the O.T. text but the crowds recognize Jesus as the Son of David, the Messiah that was expected. Hosanna is a transliteration of the Hebrew in Psa. 118:25 that originally meant ‘save us.’ Only five days after this event many of the people present in these crowds will change their shouting to ‘Crucify Him.’ What would cause such a change in the people’s opinion about Jesus?
