The Rollercoaster

Parenting—it can be the most gratifying and humbling experience all wrapped up in one. Just when people finally think they have it all figured out, the journey called parenting throws them for a loop. Parenting is like riding a roller coaster. IT HAS ITS UPS AND DOWNS. Its twists and turns. Sometimes it is a smooth ride while at other times it can jolt you to the core. Like the thrill of a roller coaster, parents experience some of the greatest joys and the scariest of moments, sometimes even at the same time, where rearing children is concerned. On the parenting rollercoaster it does not matter whether a parent is climbing an uphill battle, on a downward spiral, or they are experiencing pure joy on the peak of the ride; each of them have one thing in common. Once the ride begins, they are locked in and must go wherever the ride takes them. Sometimes the ride may take them on a track they would rather not go, but how they respond to the highs, lows, twists and turns is so important because there, locked in tight, in the seat beside them is their child watching ever so closely to how mom or dad will respond. It is easy to be Christ-like when they are enjoying the ride, and everything is going great. But what about those times when it gets scary, or the twists and turns keep coming out of nowhere throwing them for a loop? What then?

As with all of life’s questions, God’s word has the answer. Isaiah 26:3 says, “You keep Him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because He trusts in you.” There is no doubt that when parents experience difficulties that are out of their control (especially when it has to do with their children), it can be gut wrenching, even devastating at times. And while mom and dad may not be able to control the situation or circumstances one thing they can control is how they respond to it. Even in moments of anger, frustration, disappointment, or even utter heart break over their child parents can still be at peace in the midst of it all if THEY ARE TRUSTING FULLY, WHOLLY, AND ONLY IN THE LORD. This truth does not just apply to the roller coaster ride of parenting, it applies to the roller coaster of life. Many things people face in their life are out of their control, but what they do in those type of situations is of utmost importance. This verse does not promise that a person’s life is going to be a smooth ride without ups and downs. It assures them they can have peace, no matter the circumstance, if their mind is fixed on the Lord and they are trusting Him. That is the only way to genuinely enjoy the ride.
