Multiply—Week 13

When we talk about a section or story in the Gospels the more technical term for this literary unit is a pericope. The plural is pericopes or pericopae. This week let’s look at some pericopes where we can see Luke’s interest as a medical doctor. The Scripture quotations will be from the Christian Standard Bible. 2020. Nashville, TN: Holman Bible Publishers. The first pericope we will look at was the last pericope we read last week. See if you can notice this medical interest of Luke.
  • Lk 4:38—After he left the synagogue, he entered Simon’s house. Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked him about her.
  • Mk 1:30—Simon’s mother-in-law was lying in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once.
  • Mt 8:14—Jesus went into Peter’s house and saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.
  • Lk 5:12—While he was in one of the towns, a man was there who had leprosy all over him. He saw Jesus, fell facedown, and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
  • Mk 1:40—Then a man with leprosy, came to him and, on his knees,, begged him, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”
  • Mt 8:2—Right away a man with leprosy came up and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
  • Lk 6:6—On another Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. A man was there whose right hand was shriveled.
  • Mk 3:1—Jesus entered the synagogue again, and a man was there who had a shriveled hand.
  • Mt 12:10—There he saw a man who had a shriveled hand, and in order to accuse him they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”
  • Lk 7:2—A centurion’s servant, who was highly valued by him, was sick and about to die.
  • Mk—No parallel
  • Mt 8:5-6—When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, pleading with him, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible agony.”

In last week’s blog we mentioned Luke’s emphasis on prayer. See Lk 5:33; 6:12 and 6:28 this week. For Luke’s emphasis on women see Lk 8:1-3 which is a pericope that is unique to Luke.

Another pericope that is unique to Luke in this week’s reading is found in Lk 7:11-17. Jesus is on the way to the town of Nain. Nain was located about 6 miles southeast of Nazareth or about 25 miles southwest of Capernaum. As Jesus approaches the town there is a funeral procession of a young man. Luke informs us that the young man was the only son of a widow. This makes the situation even more dire. This widow would have no one to care for her and support her in her old age. But Jesus had compassion on her and told her to stop weeping and He commanded the young man to get up. And the young man got up, he could not do otherwise. Someday all who are in the graves will get up, Oh Glorious Day!
